Huhtamaki uses a wide range of paperboard forming technologies to manufacture innovative hot and cold beverage cups, ice cream and food containers, pressed paper plates and trays and other packaging to meet customer and consumer requirements around the world.
Materials used for paperboard packaging are always of high quality to fulfill the requirements of the foodservice customers. Most of our paperboard is currently based on wood fiber from the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified sustainably managed sources.
Paper cups use Solid Bleached Sulphate (SBS) paperboard. Considered as a premium grade for packaging when purity, good appearance and runnability of the packaging material are required. The board is coated with thin layers of polymer compounds, on one side or on both sides, depending on the use.
Standard paper cups have PE coating either on inside (hot cups) or on both sides (cold cups). The key feature of PE-coating is humidity protection. It is typically used in drinking cups, frozen food, ice cream and yoghurt containers. Alternatively, Huhtamaki offers BioWareTM biopolymer coated paper cups that are industrially compostable according to the EN 13432 norm. Biopolymer coated paperboard breaks down to humus and CO2.

Paper plates are coated with either varnish or with a PE layer on top surface. Ovenable food trays have PET coating.
Paperboard is typically printed with either state of art flexo or offset printing lines and can feature customer name, logo or promotional message. Custom printing is an excellent method of communicating to customers and enhancing the brand awareness.

Huhtamaki utilizes predominantly thermoforming process in plastic production. The thermoforming process forms products out of extruded sheet. Through the in-line thermoforming process the sheet is extruded directly before feeding into the thermoformer. Any waste is grinded directly in a downstream granulator and fed back as re-grind material. Thermoformed plastic cups can be printed with dry offset printing.
Thermoformed plastic packaging is manufactured from a range of polymers such as Polypropylene (PP), recycled or virgin Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Polystyrene (PS) and biopolymers such as Ingeo PLA and high heat PLA.
Injection molding is a manufacturing process for producing plastic items such as cutlery by injecting plastic material into a mold. Huhtamaki Foodservice uses PS, CPLA and Mater-bi resins for its cutlery products.
Huhtamaki Foodservice produces molded fiber products such as Chinet plates and Strongholder cup carrier trays from 100% recovered paper that is dissolved in water to form fine fibers, which are then pressed and dried to the requested form. After the packaging has dried it is once again pressed and can be printed. Alternatively Huhtamaki has also bagasse fiber products in its range. Bagasse is using residual side material from sugarcane production.
Molded fiber can be formed into various three-dimensional shapes with many favourable characteristics. The end product offers strong and rigid, yet light-weight products. Molded fiber forming technology can be divided into three categories:
Rough molded fiber packs are made of 100% recycled fibres such as newspapers, magazines and cardboard. Rough molded fiber is typically used in cup carriers, egg packaging and various fruit and vegetable packagings.
Smooth molded fiber technology is used to manufacture Chinet® plates and bowls for foodservice operators and retail sales from recycled pre-consumer fiber. Bagasse fiber products are also produced with smooth molding technology, but due to different fiber, look of product is slightly different.
Folding carton packaging
We have both traditional folding carton packaging technology as well as special corrugated F Flute technology. Huhtamaki BCP Ltd is a corrugated packaging specialist based in Blackburn, Lancashire. Point of difference is in the functionality and presentational qualities – using fluting as insulation against heat, and for safety and rigidity. Solutions include products such as insulated paper cup wraps, susceptor and greaseproof food packaging and various Food-to-Go solutions for sandwiches, salads and bakery products.
